The role of a School Director

In response to our last parent questionnaire where some of you indicated you knew little of what a Director does, we felt it would be useful to give you an overview of our role in school. Most importantly, our main aim is to provide a positive contribution to the education and wellbeing of all the children who attend Broughton Primary School. As Broughton is an Academy we are known as Directors and not Governors but have a very similar role.

Directors/Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to play in raising school standards. The role of the Board of Directors/Governing Board is absolutely key to the effectiveness of a school. Time and time again Ofsted (the National Inspection Body for schools) has noted that the most effective schools demonstrate effective leadership and management - including by the Board of Directors.

School Directors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. They appoint the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher, hold the main responsibility for finance in schools and work with the Headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.

The role of the Board of Directors is a strategic one with three key functions:

  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

Directors and trustees set the aims and objectives for the school. They set the policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives. They monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and act as a source of challenge and support to the Headteacher.

The Directors at Broughton are made up of people from all walks of life including those who are retired, some who are ex teachers, professionals from the community and parents of children within the school. Profiles and information about each of us can be found on the school website

Together we all have the same aims which are to ensure the children of Broughton School progress from the moment they walk through our doors to the moment they leave. We aim to provide a safe, secure environment which encourages our children to succeed and flourish in everything they do.

If you have any questions for us please feel free to contact us through the school or approach us in person. We will try and answer any questions you may have and get back to you if we don’t have the answers at hand.

There will be a biography of all the Directors appearing in the Newsletter week by week after the Christmas break.
